The most traditional hardwood used for doors and one with a truly timeless appeal. Dense, hard and with very good resistance to shrinkage and warping.
Oak front doors will give you years of excellent performance and that solid feeling that we all associate with superior quality.
When painted, a solid oak front door will have a slight grain, while when varnished, it will have the familiar warm ‘oak’ hue. A range of stain options is also available.
Excellent value exotic hardwood, nearly as hard and dense as oak, with similar performance characteristics.
It is reddish brown in colour with noticeable grain, which means than a varnish meranti front door will be on a darker side, whether kept natural or stained (some compare the hue to mahogany).
When spray painted, meranti shows noticeable grain.
This is a ‘modified wood’ option, which starts as a softwood (similar to pine). The wood is then treated during the acetylation process, which modifies the structure of the timber, giving it performance characteristics similar to hardwoods.
It is thus significantly harder than pine, though not as dense as oak or meranti. It is by far the most durable and resistant to shrinking, warping and insects of all the timbers used for doors.
Naturally pale in appearance, Accoya doors are good for staining and provide a completely smooth finish when spray-painted.
A traditionally used carpentry softwood, and the most budget-friendly option among solid wood exterior doors’ materials, pine still offers decent performance at affordable prices.
